Understanding ADHD. Unlocking Your Potential.
ADHD presents differently from person to person. Some individuals struggle primarily with inattention, while others experience hyperactivity, impulsivity, or a combination of both. Many adults live with ADHD for years before recognizing that the challenges they’ve experienced throughout life may have an underlying explanation.
Learning about ADHD is the first step toward understanding how it may affect daily life and discovering practical strategies that can help. Our ADHD Resource Center provides trusted information about symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, counseling approaches, and ADHD evaluations to help individuals and families make informed decisions with confidence.

What Is ADHD?
Now that you've learned that ADHD can affect attention, organization, emotions, and everyday life, let's take a closer look at what ADHD is and how it may impact people differently.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the brain's executive functioning—the mental skills responsible for planning, organizing, prioritizing, managing time, controlling impulses, regulating emotions, and maintaining focus. Although ADHD is often diagnosed during childhood, many individuals are not identified until adolescence or adulthood, particularly if their symptoms were misunderstood or overlooked.
ADHD is not caused by a lack of intelligence, motivation, or effort. In fact, many individuals with ADHD are highly creative, innovative, compassionate, and capable. The challenges often arise from differences in how the brain processes attention, motivation, and self-regulation, making certain everyday tasks more difficult despite a person's abilities or intentions.
Because ADHD exists on a spectrum, no two individuals experience it exactly the same way. Some people struggle most with staying organized and maintaining attention, while others experience hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotional intensity, or a combination of symptoms. These differences can influence school performance, work, relationships, parenting, finances, and overall well-being.
The good news is that ADHD is one of the most researched and treatable neurodevelopmental conditions. With greater understanding, practical strategies, appropriate support, and, when appropriate, professional treatment, individuals with ADHD can build on their strengths, overcome obstacles, and thrive in every stage of life.
